LE PHILOSOPHE-ROI CHEZ PLATON : ENTRE UTOPIE POLITIQUE ET EXIGENCE ÉTHIQUE

Résumé : Dans La République, Platon conçoit la figure du
philosophe-roi comme l’incarnation de l’union idéale entre
savoir et pouvoir. Seul le philosophe, en vertu de sa connaissance
du Bien, est apte à gouverner la cité de manière juste. Ce modèle
politique, à la fois utopique et rigoureusement construit, répond
à la crise de la démocratie athénienne et propose une hiérarchie
fondée sur la sagesse. Toutefois, cette figure suscite de vives
critiques : l’élitisme de sa formation, la méfiance envers la
démocratie et l’utopie éducative qui l’accompagne soulèvent des
doutes sur sa faisabilité. Certains, parmi lesquels Alain Badiou,
y voient une norme régulatrice féconde, d’autres, comme Karl
Popper, une dérive autoritaire masquée. La figure du philosopheroi
apparaît ainsi à la fois comme une exigence éthique pour
penser un pouvoir éclairé et comme un mythe rationnel révélant
les limites d’un modèle politique fondé exclusivement sur le
savoir.

Abstract: In The Republic, Plato presents the figure of the
philosopher-king as the ideal fusion of knowledge and power.
Only the philosopher, by virtue of his understanding of the Good,
is truly capable of governing the city justly. This political
model—both utopian and meticulously structured—responds to
the crisis of Athenian democracy and proposes a hierarchy
grounded in wisdom. Yet, the philosopher-king also invites
substantial criticism: its elitist education, suspicion of democracy
and reliance on a highly selective moral and intellectual training
raise concerns about its feasibility. While some -like Alain
Badiou- view it as a normative ideal to guide political reflection,
others—like Karl Popper—denounce it as a blueprint for 

authoritarianism. The philosopher-king thus stands both as an
ethical demand for enlightened leadership and as a rational myth
exposing the tensions inherent in a politics based solely on
knowledge.
